In the wake of generative AI’s emergence, the release of OpenAI’s large language model propelled the technology into the forefront of nearly every conversation. A tool that could generate coherent, context-aware text at scale, it quickly captured the imagination of enterprises. In the corporate world, no function lives and breathes language every day more than marketing, a discipline where teams might spend an hour debating a single word. Not surprising, marketing was the first to leap into generative AI experimentation. While IT, legal, and engineering teams cautiously reviewed risks and drafted governance protocols, marketers began testing and scaling AI at a rapid pace. What started as a set of experiments in campaign copy and brainstorming quickly evolved into a transformation of content strategy, SEO workflows, internal enablement, and go-to-market execution.
As we know, marketing is built around speed, iteration, and external engagement. Combined with a clear focus on measurable results, marketing is uniquely suited to evaluate generative AI in real time. We were among the first to highlight AI’s value and identify its potential risks, such as brand misrepresentation, hallucinated outputs, and inconsistent AI usage across the organization.
Rather than slow down, marketing teams tackled these risks directly. In doing so, we created repeatable patterns for how AI can be adopted responsibly; patterns that are now guiding AI strategy across the enterprise.

Unlike code or infrastructure, most marketing content is already designed for public consumption. This makes the marketing function an ideal testbed for generative AI. What’s created can be evaluated, corrected, and refined quickly, without compromising internal systems or customer data. But that doesn’t mean risks don’t exist.
Brand misrepresentation is one of the first and most visible challenges. Early AI-generated content often sounded generic, or worse, off-brand. Whether it was voice inconsistency, misused terminology, or an unintentional mismatch with tone, it underscored the need for human review. Instead of avoiding the use of AI, teams can address this by creating clear brand guardrails, such as approved language libraries, example inputs and outputs, and brand-specific prompt templates that ensure alignment.
Hallucinated results add another layer of complexity. AI models are probabilistic by design, and in creative work, that can lead to impressive drafts or entirely false claims. By integrating reviews into workflows, AI-generated content can be treated like a first draft, never a final product. Developing playbooks for reviewing facts, verifying references, and avoiding false claims, particularly in regulated industries such as healthcare, finance, and cybersecurity, can help to filter out potential hallucinated outcomes.
Inconsistent AI use across an organization, can be another challenge. As individuals began experimenting with AI tools independently, it didn’t take long to see inconsistent results. By developing guidelines that spell out responsible and ethical approaches, and driving the need for centralized access through enterprise-approved, paid accounts, AI use becomes more unified. These accounts offer privacy settings, content usage logs, and control over whether resources are used to train models, which are critical factors in maintaining data security and IP protection.
These adjustments accelerate adoption by building trust and consistency. AI usage shouldn’t be a free-for-all but a managed, measurable capability.
The Sandbox Where Policy Meets Practice
Are we surprised that marketing is most likely the first department to successfully implement AI adoption as a working model? Not really. If done thoughtfully, that model can become a blueprint for the rest of the enterprise.
The key isn’t perfect governance on day one; it is an iterative process. Teams should begin with internal working groups or AI-focused Slack channels, where prompt tips, success stories, and missteps are shared openly. Then, move to cross-functional task forces to draft AI use guidelines with input from marketing, legal, IT security, and engineering.
What emerges are practical policies in the form of concise, clear documents that answer key questions such as: what is acceptable to input, what should be reviewed by a human, what must be disclosed externally, and what should never be shared with AI tools, even on paid accounts. Importantly, these policies aren’t locked down. They are living documents, with at least quarterly reviews to reflect changes in technology, tools, and enterprise maturity.
Marketing’s groundwork gives other departments the confidence to initiate their own AI exploration. For instance, sales teams can use AI to refine pitches and personalize outreach. Product managers can structure roadmaps or summarize user feedback. HR can apply it to job descriptions and policy drafting.
While each of these examples requires oversight, departments can build upon marketing’s playbook instead of starting from scratch, replicating its approach to training, documentation, and safe experimentation.

Marketing’s early adoption of AI is a roadmap for the enterprise. It demonstrates that speed doesn’t require recklessness, that governance can grow in parallel with experimentation, and that transformation happens when capabilities are democratized, not centralized.
AI is now embedded in the infrastructure of work, and marketing was the first department to treat it that way. From testing to training, from piloting to policy, marketing teams are proving that enterprise AI can be scaled responsibly, iteratively, and with measurable results.
Leaders across functions should look to marketing not as a consumer of AI but as a best practices model for adopting it. The path forward starts with small teams, clear use cases, and a willingness to revise as needed. Providing access, guidance, and forums for sharing enables teams to adapt with structure, not restriction. As the conversation begins shifting to more advanced concepts like Agentic AI, a technology still in its infancy and poised to enable AI systems to operate autonomously and advance decision making, organizations need to build best practices now that will prepare them for what’s next.
